Choir

We are recruiting new choir members of all abilities to join the choir at St Peter's. No prior experience needed - all are welcome!

The choir sing a mix of traditional hymns and contemporary worship songs supported by our fabulous organ. Why not come along to a practice and give it a try?

Our Organ

At the heart of our worship and musical tradition at St. Peter’s is our magnificent pipe organ. Celebrated for its rich, historic tone and impressive presence, it has been inspiring our congregation and visitors alike for generations. Lovingly maintained and woven into the very fabric of our church life, it is an instrument we are incredibly proud of.

History of the Organ

c.1922: The specification of the organ was drawn up by Revd. Noel Bonavia-Hunt. Noel had a lifelong interest in the pipe organ, becoming an advisor on organ specifications in churches throughout the UK. He also wrote books on the organ. Further details on Noel Bonavia-Hunt can be found here.
The Build: The well-established Leeds organ builder, J. J. Binns, was instructed to build the instrument at a cost of £1750. In today’s money this equates to approximately £130,000, though realistically a modest pipe organ built today could be between £150,000-£600,000 depending on the specification.
Location & Layout: The organ is situated on the North side of the church, just behind the choir stalls. The console is elevated and consists of three manuals and pedals.
c.1952: The organ builder, J.W. Walker & Sons (London) restored the organ and made some tonal alterations.
c.1975: Charles Smethurst of Manchester cleaned the organ and overhauled some of the reed pipes.
c.2001: Pendlebury of Cleveleys cleaned the organ, installed electric action to keys and stops, replaced some of the warn keys and returned the facade pipes to an original silver colour - they had previously been painted pink! The wood casing, which was also painted grey and pink, was overlaid with the current wooden panels by a life-long choir member, and carpenter, Alan Wilkinson.

The organ is currently maintained by John Barnes of Keighley, West Yorkshire.
