Funerals
"We believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died."
1 Thessalonians 4:14
Jesus died and was buried, but God raised him from the dead. A Christian funeral is all about the hope that we too, through faith in Jesus, will be raised with Him to eternal life. The service includes readings, prayers and a short talk about Christian hope, along with a eulogy, tribute and/or poems to remember the person who has died. The service normally includes music and/or hymns to reflect on our memories.
Arranging a Funeral
Funerals are arranged via a Funeral Director who will help you to plan the service and arrange all the details. This page contains some information about the service in Church. Please email priest@fleetwood.church to discuss.
Decisions to Make
The funeral director and the priest will walk you through each step of planning the funeral, so please don't worry about having to have everything worked out. However, if you would like to start thinking about the funeral service ahead of meeting with the funeral director and the priest, some decisions to consider about the service are:
What music and/or hymns will be included in the service? Will music be pre-recorded or played on the organ? Will there be a choir?
What Bible reading or readings will you use?
Will there be a eulogy and/or tributes? Who will write them and who will read them?
Availability of the Church
Most of the funerals we conduct are held at St Peter's rather than St David's as this is a larger, more traditional building. The funeral director will work with us and you to find a time that works for everybody. On a typical week, St Peter's is normally available for funerals at the following times:
Monday: 2pm or 3pm
Tuesday: Any time from 9am to 4pm
Wednesday: Any time from noon to 4pm
Thursday: Any time from 11am to 4pm
We do not typically offer funerals Friday-Sunday. We prefer to book funerals at least two weeks in advance to allow time to plan and prepare the service.
Costs
The funeral director should explain to you the full costs of the service. The costs that we charge include the statutory costs set by the national Church of England, plus some additional costs set locally. The statutory fees vary depending on the service. Some of the fees set for 2024 are listed below.
Funeral service in church: £228
Burial of body in churchyard immediately preceding or following on from service in church: £366
Burial at the cemetery or cremation at the crematorium immediately preceding or following on from service in church: £34
The fees for the service at the cemetery or crematorium only include the fee for the minister. The funeral director will be able to explain to you the full costs of the service.
Additional fees that we charge are:
Verger: £75
Organist (if required): £75
There is no additional charge for pre-recorded music played on the sound system; this is included in the verger fee.
